عندما لم يستجيبوا للدعوة والهداية لله ولم يعملوا بوعظ رسولهم، أرسل الله عليهم ريحاً صرصراً عاتية، أهلكتهم كما أهلكت الظالمين من قبلهم، وفي النهاية أهلك شداد بن عاد ومن معه، عقاباً لهم من قبل الله سبحانه وتعالى، وتولى المُلك بعده ابنه مرثد بن شداد، وكان مسلماً مؤمناً بنبي الله هود عليه السلام.

بعد أن دفن أبيه الذي مات على غير الإسلام، وضع عند رأسه لوحاً ذهبياً، وكتب عليه بلسان والده شداد كما يلي: (اعتبر يا أيها المغرور بالعمر المديد، أنا شداد بن عاد صاحب الحصن المشيد، ملكت الشرق والغرب بسلطان شديد، فأتى هود وكنا في ضلال قبل هود، فدعانا لو قبلنا كان بالأمر الرشيد، فعصيناه ونادى مالكم من محيد، فأتتنا صيحة تهوي من الأفق البعيد فتوافينا كزرع وسط بيداء الحصيد.)
